Wedding in Santorini. What to start with. A short step-by-step guide.

The Greek island of Santorini is one of the most romantic places in the world. With it’s flowering trees, snow white houses and stunning old churches, it is not surprising that this is such a popular location for weddings. Santorini is a world leader of "wedding tourism".  Couples from different countries come here for the wedding of their dreams. Imagine – your wedding can also take place here on the snow-white warm resort, surrounded by flowers, the bubble of the sea and the bright sun. In this article we`ll try to answer the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) and give you a general idea about ins and outs of organizing weddings on Santorini. 

 

The best season for a wedding on Santorini

The best season for weddings on Santorini is from May to October. At this time it is  not so hot, there is less risk of rain and the island is lush with blooming trees and flowers.  A visit to the island during the autumn season (September-October) offers lower prices in hotels and restaurants. At the beginning of November the weather starts to get worse, thick clouds cover the sky and temperatures tend to stay below 12-15 degrees. In March temperatures improve and despite the cooler sea water, the island feels warm and welcoming again.  Lower prices in hotels and restaurants are a plus of a visit to the island in the autumn season (September-October). But at the beginning of November the weather gets worse, thick clouds cover the sky and the day temperature does not exceed 12-15 degrees. However, in March the situation gets better and despite the cool sea water Santorini is again ready to open its arms to the guests.

 

What is the ideal period to start preparing a wedding on Santorini

If you dream of a wedding on Santorini, it`s better to start preparation a year in advance - popular places for weddings are booked many months in advance and the most popular, for example Dana Vilas or Le Ciel several years beforehand! However, it is possible to organize a wedding in a shorter period of time, but the choice of available locations will be fairly limited.

 

What to start with. A short step-by-step guide.

So, the first thing you need to do is to choose an approximate date of the wedding. After this you will need to:

  1. Determine approximate budget;
  2. Decide whether there will be guests at your wedding and how many;
  3. Contact us - we will calculate your project and check availability of all the locations on your prospective date. It's absolutely free.

 

Once you have received our pre-calculation and information on availability of various locations based on your date, you will need to pay attention to the following considerations:

  • If the manager has sent you several options for your ceremony - you should decide on one option.

  • Book the location to hold the ceremony on the date of your wedding and make a deposit to ensure that the location has been assigned to you.

  • If your ceremony is official - prepare all the necessary documents. This is a fairly simple process, butt if you have any difficulties - contact us.

  • Make sure that both you and your guests have the opportunity to fly to Greece at the right time.

  • Buy or book tickets and the hotel for you and your guests (It is worth mentioning that Santorini does not have large hotels so it is quite difficult to choose convenient accommodation for a large number of guests.  If you need any help with accommodation - we are happy to advise and help with booking).

  • Coordinate the main points of your contract with the Agency . Remember, even 2 months before the ceremony you can amend the contract to “improve” it. So, it's better to make a contract with the Agency for a more affordable option than a “luxury” one. Remember: you can always easily add necessary components to your wedding program, but it is is much more complicated to remove them from the contract.
    P.S. We sincerely advice you to decide on the final contract at least 6 months before the ceremony.

Booking the date

Organization of a wedding celebration on Santorini starts with booking the date. The Agency will book the day and time of the official wedding ceremony and will agree on the location where you decided to have your wedding banquet. The choice of the location, the format of the event, as well as the entire program of the celebration fully depends on your budget.On Santorini there are a variety of options - from budget to VIP. Therefore, it is better to agree on the budget of the wedding ceremony with your Advisor, so that they can find you the best combination of quality and price.

How much does a wedding on Santorini cost?

You shouldn't think that a wedding on Santorini is necessarily expensive. The cost of the simplest symbolic wedding starts from 890 Euros, or an official wedding ceremony - from 1210 Euros.

For most customers the price is the most critical issue. So, what affects the cost of a wedding in Greece?

    1. Guests. If you invite guests, arrange in advance who will pay for their visa, tickets and accommodation. You can invite many relatives and friends, celebrate your wedding in the company of only the closest people or you can decide to get married without any guests.
    2. Location of the wedding celebration. The more magnificent the banquet, the more expensive it is. Costs also depend on the venue. You can book a whole restaurant for your guests or you can have your wedding dinner on an open terrace on the seashore, just two of you or with close family. The average dinner price starts from 100 Euro per person.
    3. Photo and video. These precious moments should be treasured forever using professionals who can capture what you want in exactly the right way. So this is an element worth loosening the purse strings for. It would be a shame to organize a dream wedding on Santorini and to get low-quality pictures and videos. That is why you should listen to the advice of your wedding planner – they know for sure which of the photographers of the island you can trust shooting such an important event!     4. Cars, musicians, entertainment, stylists, unique decorations or even helicopter transfers – you can choose any additional options for your celebration.
    5. Floristry and decor. Venue decoration consists of bouquets, table decorations, a wedding arch and much more. A classic wedding ceremony on Santorini is elegant and beautiful with the magnificent view of the Caldera offering its own type of decoration.
    6. Entertainment. You can choose to stay only a few days or you can combine your wedding experience with some recreation, entertainment and exploration around the island. For the wedding day it is better to choose a luxury hotel and for your "vacation" you can opt for a more budget accommodation. There are some nice beach hotels for your guests and stunning beach locations. The northern part of Santorini also offers some of the most beautiful and romantic locations on the island and also some of the more pricier accommodation options.
    7. Preparation of documents for the official marriage is another important item of the wedding budget on Santorini. These cost is fixed – you cannot save here.

Main locations

Registration of a marriage on Santorini takes place in a wedding location, the next day after the ceremony at the wedding location you must apply to the municipality to complete the registration (all the documents shall be prepared in advance). The couple will be able to get the marriage certificate a month after the ceremony (it is sent by post). The church wedding ceremony is held in large cathedrals or in one of the churches on the island and it requires a special set of documents. The most popular places for church weddings are the Cathedral of the Metropolis, the Church of Agios Theodori , the Church of the Ascension or St. Irini Church in the town of the same name


Wedding banquets can be arranged at any place that you prefer - in a restaurant or a banquet hall, on the balcony of your hotel or right on the beach, on a yacht or in a wine tasting room.

Accommodation for guests

You can offer for your guests to book accommodation on their own through such services as booking.com or airbnb.com. But our Agency (for free) will offer you comfortable accommodation options for your guests basing on our experience in conducting wedding ceremonies. It is not necessary for the couple and the guests to stay at the same hotel. Each of your guests can be accommodated in the hotel which will please them most.

What documents are necessary for a wedding in Santorini?

To register a marriage officially or to have a church wedding ceremony on Santorini, you will need to prepare the following documents:

Wedding ceremony

    • A symbolic wedding in Santorini is the simplest in terms of preparation. If you are already married and just want to have an unusual ritual or to celebrate a wedding anniversary – then this event is for you!
    • The official ceremony is the real marriage after which you get the marriage certificate certified by the municipality of the island.
    • The church wedding – a religious ritual can be performed together with the wedding or separately (if you are already married).

How to make sure that everything is going according to plan?

So, the date is booked, the place of registration and the place of the celebration are chosen, the guests list and the format of the wedding are determined, the tickets and visa are ready, the hotels are booked, the documents are collected and you're on the island. How to be sure that your wedding will go according to plan? We offer you a small checklist:Your dress, veil, jewelry, accessories, shoes (comfortable!) – check if everything is in place? If you forgot something, the Agency will quickly choose a rental salon for you, where you will be able to get the necessary items.

    1. Your photographer/videographer – it is better to meet with them before the wedding to discuss the concept and details.
    2. Your pastry chef, chef or catering, a range of beverages - go through the list together with your agent or a wedding coordinator.
    3. Your entertainment – the entertainer, performers, doves, fireworks, etc.
    4. Airport transfers on arrival and throughout the journey, the driver for the newlyweds and their guests.
    5. Other details of the celebration.
